Client: Schmidlin UK
Client Contact: Paul Haslam Project: Nat West Tower Works: Removal of AIB Contract Duration: 26 weeks Contract Sum: £260,000 Brief Description:Each window mullion was lined with Asbestos insulation board, which had become disturbed following a terrorist bomb strike.
The project required us to remove every window and mullion, and then strip the Asbestos from the mullion in a remote location. The works had to be carried out using a unique access cradle system which was erected on the roof level then lowered down the outside of the building on pulleys. The new windows were then installed on the above tier of the 3 tier cradle which meant there was always someone working immediately above us which made safety a major issue. Client: Pinewood Studios Group

Where they were wrap/sealed and placed in our disposal container. The structure was then fine cleaned and prepared ready for the new applications. Client: Bovis
Client Contact: Jon Conway Project: Former London Stock Exchange Works: Removal of inner flue lining and asbestos block Contract Duration: 16 weeks Contract Sum: £440,000 Brief Description: The works entailed the removal of the inner concrete flue lining sections and asbestos lining blocks from the basement to the 28th floor and roof level with no easy means of access.
At every floor level we erected a scaffold platform to allow emergency egress from the flue and to allow waste removal. Unfortunately this was not sufficient to allow us to work in the flue; we therefore had to engineer another option to get the asbestos liner out. It was at this point we designed a two person boson hoist which was lowered from the roof inside the flue to the ground floor, some 260’ in all. Client: Trafalgar House (Skanska)
Client Contact: Gary Clifford Project: Bank of England Printing Works Works: Removal of Asbestos works throughout the Printing Works Contract Duration: 1 year Contract Sum: £1.5 million Brief Description: Cranegates Ltd was involved in the major refurbishment of the Bank of England printing works from start to finish. As an existing contractor already working at the printing works we were able to bring a lot of knowledge to the design table and assist our client – Trafalgar House.
The site is security sensitive for obvious reasons and meant all operatives had to pass stringent security checks before being allowed in. The logistics of the project proved difficult in many areas as the printing works was in full production at all times, this was definitely the case when asbestos was discovered in the concrete roof structure during the window replacement above them main print floor. The asbestos had been cast as fixing blocks to prevent drilling into the beams and was only discovered during the window removal, this was stopped and Cranegates Ltd erected full enclosures over the main print hall and removed all the windows from a birdcage scaffold. |
